Our Work
The Pollinator Protection Fund is an active grassroots non-profit organization founded in Southern California. We are driven by dedicated volunteers on a mission to support the unique biodiversity of the region by creating welcoming habitats for essential pollinators. Our native habitat gardens can be found in public parks, HOAs, private spaces and hotels.
We are a proud partner of the Monarch Joint Venture. Our other partners include the US Forest Service and garden clubs and communities throughout coastal Southern California.
We are now broadening our work to the United Kingdom and working in partnership with Anglia Ruskin University.
Public Park Monarch Butterfly and Pollinator Gardens
Our founding public pollinator garden is in Heisler Park, Laguna Beach, CA.
This garden is comprised of a diverse array of native planting which attracts many species of pollinating insects and birds. The garden is accompanied by bright and uplifting educational signage in English and Spanish. Since the creation of this garden, we have worked to create other sizeable pollinator habitat gardens in the City of Laguna Beach for the public to enjoy. All gardens are complete with educational signage in English and Spanish. Other partner Cities include Malibu, CA. In Malibu we have created an entirely regionally native pollinator garden with educational signage to help give people the knowledge to take home and create their own pollinator garden. Whether it be a space in their garden or a milkweed plant in a pot – every positive action makes an impact.
Hotel Butterfly Gardens
We have created thriving butterfly gardens with educational signage at the La Jolla Estancia Hotel and Spa. We have transformed two overgrown and lifeless areas into thriving micro-ecosystems for Western Monarch butterflies, hummingbirds, native bees and moths and many other species. There is a seating area to sit and enjoy Nature’s beauty and a honeycomb walkway allowing visitors to walk 360° around Monarch butterfly habitat. We have also equipped the hotel with Monarch butterfly hotels. These ‘hotels’ are habitat boxes containing everything a monarch needs to support their lifecycle. Each box contains plenty of native milkweed, lilac verbena – a great host plant for moths – and a great food source for pollinators with its profuse purple blooms and, also, native grasses which provide shelter for caterpillars and shade.
HOA Pollinator Gardens
Throughout Blue Heron Park in the Newport Beach, CA community of East Bluff we have created native plant pollinator gardens. These habitat gardens are host to rare and diverse plant species to support a whole range of pollinators. Sonoran Bumblebees have made garden areas their home together with species of butterfly, moth and other native bee species. Native tree species nestle between a hedgerow of lemonade berry and grasses give shelter to caterpillars as they feed on host plants. Our other HOA habitat gardens are in Newport Beach and Laguna Niguel, CA.
